I spend the day at the training center, sparring with the Arcav members of the guard. By the time I am finished, sweat runs down my body and my mind is clearer.

I swing by my quarters and shower and change, before heading straight back to the palace. Vazta meets me outside her quarters.

“What did she do today?”

He shrugs. “Meeting with Varian, a quick stop at the medi-center, and she has spent the rest of the day in her quarters.”

I grind my teeth. I know exactly why my devious female was at the medi-center. Resolve fills me, and I ignore the voice in my head that tells me that if I do what I am planning, I will lose Saria forever. Never again will she scream and writhe in agony. Not while I am still in this universe.

I warned her.

I open the door and find her curled up on the sofa, asleep. My heart softens as I simply watch her breathe. She looks so fragile and innocent like this. She mumbles something in her sleep and I reach for the device in my pocket, deliberating.

She will hate me for this.

I am under no illusions as to Saria forgiving me. If I choose to do this, I will lose any trust we have built. I hesitate, scanning her body. One of her wings is lying over the top of the sofa, and she shifts, wincing in her sleep as it moves.

I can hear her voice in my head, telling me I have no right to do this. But she is my mate. I feel it deep in my bones. As her male, I have a responsibility to protect her and keep her safe. I told her that I would never again allow her to experience pain like she felt under Brin’s hands.

It is the thought of her whimpering and thrashing in the medi-center that almost decides my actions. I move forward to place the tiny device on Saria’s temple and then curse, clenching my fist and crushing the delicate device. I stroke my finger down her soft cheek and watch her eyes flicker open, glazed with sleep.

“What is it?”

“I have just come close to doing something that would ruin us. I do not know where to go from here.”

My female frowns. “What do you mean?”

I open my hand and show her the broken device. “This would have put you to sleep. When I found out that you had talked to Brin without consulting me, I was determined to protect you from that agony.”

The color drains from her face and she pulls her head back.

“You would take my choice?”

I nod. “I am not proud of it.”

This situation is turning me into someone I no longer recognize.

Saria takes a deep breath and she looks at me like she no longer recognizes me. I reach for her and she rears back.

“I need some time.”

Everything in me rebels at the thought. Time for what? To decide that she does not want me in her life? A
